Remove ash tray. Remove the ash tray trim by prying up on the front of the trim piece to detach the clips.
Remove the two mounting screws at the bottom of the stereo assembly that were behind the ash tray trim.
Insert the the DIN removal tools into the holes on the edges of the stereo unit face. If you don't have the DIN removal tools, get two 8" pieces of coat hanger wire and bend them each into 'U's to use in place of the DIN removal tools. There should be two holes on each side in the face of the stereo unit. Place the tips of one tool into the two holes on the right side. Slowly slide the tool into the unit until a light click is heard or felt. Repeat for the left side. Push the outer ends of the tools outwards away from each other. This should release the metal springs holding the unit in place. Pull the unit out from the console. This should be relatively easy... if not, the clips are not being released properly. Do not force the unit out.

Remove the unit and detach the antenna wire, and two connectors from the rear of the stereo unit.

Step 2: Installing The New Stereo Unit

Install this kit Metra 99-5556 Single Din Stereo Installation Kit 1988-1992 Ford Probe

If your Probe came with just an AM/FM radio or AM/FM Cassette unit, mount the radio using the hardware that came with the new unit. Some creativity may be required. If your Probe came with a CD player, you will either have to obtain the OEM tray that normally is under the radio unit of Probes without CD players, or use the metra kit which blocks the opening.
Connect the wiring as shown below to the Metra 70-1770 and plug it in.

If your Probe has the premium sound system option and you plan to use the factory amplifier with your new stereo unit, proceed with amplifier instructions in this forum.
Connect the antenna wire to the stereo unit.
After all connections are completed and the new stereo unit is mounted, reinstall ashtray, ash tray trim, and shift trim.

If your Probe had the premium sound system option and you do not plan to use the factory amplifier with your new stereo unit, you must bypass the amplifier completely. For instructions, continue to Factory amplifier bypass instructions in this forum.
