Step 1: Removing The Factory Stereo Unit
If equipped with a center armrest/storage compartment, open the armrest and remove the two screws at the bottom of the storage compartment. Remove the armrest cover.
Remove the two screws at the bottom of the storage compartment base and remove the storage compartment from the vehicle.
Remove shifter trim:
Automatic Transaxle: Remove the trim piece around the shift lever by prying upwards.
Manual Transaxle: Unscrew the shift knob. Remove the shift boot and trim piece around the shifter by prying upwards.
Pry the console trim panel from the console by pulling upwards, I recommend using plastic prybars made for removing plastic panels, sold at your local auto part store. Disconnect any electrical connectors from the bottom of the panel and remove the panel from the vehicle.
Remove the two mounting screws on the bottom holding the instrument panel trim in place. Pry the panel straight off and disconnect any wires (if any are present) from the rear of the panel.
Insert the the DIN removal tools into the holes on the edges of the stereo unit face. If you don't have the DIN removal tools, get two 8" pieces of coat hanger wire and bend them each into 'U's to use in place of the DIN removal tools. There should be two holes on each side in the face of the stereo unit. Place the tips of one tool into the two holes on the right side. Slowly slide the tool into the unit until a light click is heard or felt. Repeat for the left side. Push the outer ends of the tools outwards away from each other. This should release the metal springs holding the unit in place. Pull the unit out from the console. This should be relatively easy... if not, the clips are not being released properly. Do not force the unit out.
Remove the unit and detach the antenna wire, and two connectors from the rear of the stereo unit.
Step 2. Installing new stereo.
Install Metra dash kit and mount your new stereo.
Use wiring Metra kit to wire in your new stereo, I recommend soldering the wires and using shrink tubing to cover the connections.
Use this wiring table for reference on the wiring connections.
Connect the antenna wire to the stereo unit.
Reinstall everything back and your good to go.
If your Probe has the premium sound system option and plan to use the factory amplifier with your new stereo unit, proceed to factory amplifier topic in this forum.
After all connections are completed and the new stereo unit is mounted, reinstall the interior trim.
If your Probe had the premium sound system option and you do not plan to use the factory amplifier with your new stereo unit, you must bypass the amplifier completely, proceed to factory amplifier topic in this forum.
