Working With The Factory Amplifier (If equipped)
Overview
The premium sound system package that was offered with the Probe included an amplifier that delivered 20-watts per channel. It is located behind the right side quarter panel trim, near the B-pillar. Normally, installation kits will include a wiring harness that is used to bypass the factory amplifier. This, however, is unnecessary unless you are worried about loss of sound quality.
Option 1: Using The Amplifier
Find the red/green wire on the main radio connector.
Connect the red/green wire to the new stereo unit's amplifier trigger wire. If one is not available, connect it to the blue/white wire or blue remote wire. Option 2: Bypassing The Amplifier
Remove the trunk cover.
Remove the four screws and two push tabs from the rear trunk trim. Pry the trim away from the body to disengage the retaining clips. Remove the rear trunk trim.
If equipped with a subwoofer, remove the four subwoofer speaker mounting bolts. Disconnect the electrical connector and remove the subwoofer. Fold down the right rear seat and remove the three push tabs from the front, two push tabs from the rear, and two screws from the right side trunk trim. Remove the safety belt trim and remove the hidden push tab. Pry the trim away from the body to disengage the retaining clips.(be careful and use the right tools for the job, nothing sharp use interior plastic pry bars) Disconnect the trunk lamp and remove the right side trunk trim from the vehicle.
Remove the two push tabs from the quarter panel trim and pry the trim panel away from the body to disengage the retaining clips. Remove the right quarter panel trim. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the amplifier and remove the three mounting nuts. Remove the amplifier from the vehicle or keep it in the vehicle and install the bypass harness that was included in your Metra wiring kit 70-5514. Or also if you have a factory eq or cd player, see the topic in the forum on car audio wiring. Reinstall the trim.
