TRANSAXLE - 4EAT - OVERHAUL SERVICE TIPS
FORD:
1989 PROBE
ISSUE:
Several different service tips have been put together to assist technicians when performing an overhaul on a 4EAT transaxle. Proper use of this information should reduce the potential of repeat repairs.
ACTION:
Refer to the information when servicing a 4EAT transaxle.
Torque Converter (inside bushing)
Inspect for damage, breakage or rough areas on the bushing. Make sure the size of the bushing is within specification. If the bushing is not within specification, replace the converter.
Torque Converter End Play (inside)

Inspect the one way clutch end play by moving it with your fingers, Figure 1. If the end play is greater than 1 mm or if a noise is heard or roughness is felt when the turbine shaft is turned, replace the torque converter.
All Transaxle Bushings (except torque converter)
Inspect all the transaxle bushings for damage, breakage or rough areas. Make sure the size of the bushings are within specification. If a bushing is not within specification, replace the bushing.
3/4 Clutch Piston
Check the 3/4 clutch piston ball check for proper operation. If it does not operate correctly, install a new 3/4 clutch piston.
Turbine Shaft

Inspect the turbine shaft for breakage. Look for signs of wear in the seal ring areas, Figure 2. If breakage or wear is found, replace the turbine shaft and seal rings.
NOTE:
WHEN OVERHAULING A 4EAT TRANSAXLE ON VEHICLES BUILT BEFORE VIN # 161020, THE TURBINE SHAFT AND SEAL RINGS MUST BE REPLACED EVEN IF NO WEAR IS PRESENT.
Servo Piston Stem
Inspect the servo piston stem for excessive wear. If worn, replace the servo piston.
Oil Screen (strainer)
Look for excessive amounts of clutch dust contamination on the oil screen. Anytime a major transaxle failure has occurred, replace the oil screen.
NOTE:
LINE PRESSURE WILL NOT RISE IF THE OIL SCREEN (STRAINER) IS BLOCKED.
Control Valve
Care should be taken when re-installing the following items to the control valve:
^ Make sure the "O" ring for the solenoid valve is not broken or damaged. If broken or damaged, replace the "O" ring.
^ Install the strainer to the solenoids.
^ Do not damage the solenoid valve wire harness when re-installing the control valve cover to the transaxle case. Extra care should be taken if the transaxle is being serviced in the vehicle.
Clutch Piston Seals
Check the clutch piston seals for external damage. Perform a leak test to make sure no leaks are present. If no external damage or leaks are present, the seals are reusable. If external damage or leaks are present, install new clutch piston seals.
Differential Assembly

Make sure that movement within the differential is less than 0.1 mm in all the directions shown in Figure 3. If movement is greater than 0.1 mm in any direction, determine whether the pinion shaft or differential housing is causing the concern. Replace the faulty component.
