This TSB article is being republished in its entirety to advise replacing the reverse idler shaft in addition to the roller bearings.


ISSUE: A manual transaxle that will not hold in reverse gear, when under load, such as backing up hill or extended reverse gear operation may be caused by the reverse idler gear roller bearing. The affected units are GT models only.

ACTION: Install two (2) new reverse idler gear roller bearings and one (1) new reverse idler shaft. Refer to the following procedure for service details.

1. Remove the transaxle from the vehicle. Refer to the 1989 Probe Shop Manual, Section 16-40-12 for removal details.

2. Remove the reverse idler gear shaft and reverse idler gear from the transaxle. Refer to the 1989 Probe Shop Manual, Section 16-40 for service details.

3. Remove the snap ring that holds the reverse idler gear roller bearings.

4. Remove the two (2) roller bearings from the reverse idler gear.

5. Install two (2) new roller bearings in the reverse idler gear.

6. Install the snap ring that holds the reverse idler gear roller bearings.

7. Install the reverse idler gear and a new reverse idler shaft in the transaxle. Refer to the 1989 Probe Shop Manual, Section 16-40 for service details.

8. Install the transaxle in the vehicle. Refer to 1989 Probe Shop Manual, Section 16-40-15 for installation details.
