This TSB article is being republished in its entirety to correct the service part number for the checker relay.
ISSUE: The "Tail Lamp Out Warning" lamp may be mistakenly displayed because of an internal fuse failure in the lamp checker relay.
ACTION: Inspect the tail lamp circuitry and, if necessary, install a new checker relay assembly. Refer to the following procedure for service details.
1. Inspect the 15 amp fuse located in the fuse block under the dash. Replace it if it is burned out.
2. Perform Diagnosis Test Steps MM62-66. Refer to the Probe Shop Manual, pages 33-63-31 through 33 for service details.
3. Replace the checker relay assembly if it is defective. Refer to the Probe Shop Manual, page 34-50-2 for its description and location. Refer to page 80 of the EVTM if an electrical schematic is required.
4. On vehicles built before April 1989, proceed as follows:
a. Remove the remote fuel filler and hatch lever assembly. Refer to the Probe Shop Manual, Section 24-50 for service details.
b. Inspect the wiring below the levers for damage or possible short circuits.
c. Repair any damaged or shorted circuits as required.
NOTE: THE CABLES AND WIRE HARNESS WERE REPOSITIONED ON VEHICLES BUILT AFTER APRIL 1989. THEREFORE, THIS INSPECTION IS NOT REQUIRED ON THESE LATER-BUILT VEHICLES.
5. Inspect the tail lamp bulbs and sockets for any moisture contamination and corrosion. If detected, clean the sockets and apply dielectric grease to the terminals, wires and sockets.
6. If the bulb sockets are corroded, replace the tail lamp bulbs even if they are not defective. Use only the specified bulbs.
7. After all inspections and repairs are completed, confirm that the "Tail Lamp Out Warning" is no longer displayed.
