TRANSMISSION - 4EAT - FLUID INSPECTION AND LINE PRESSURE ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE
FORD: 1989 PROBE
ISSUE: The transmission fluid inspection and line pressure adjustment for the 4EAT automatic transmission used on the 1989 Probe are two important items that need to be performed if a transmission is replaced or overhauled.
ACTION: If service is required, perform the following procedures to make sure the transmission operates correctly.
Inspection of Automatic Transmission Fluid Level
1. Apply the parking brake and position wheel chocks to prevent the vehicle from rolling.
NOTE: PLACE THE VEHICLE ON A FLAT LEVEL SURFACE.
2. Start the engine to allow the transmission fluid to warm up to specification.
FIGURE 6:

3. With the engine idling, shift the gear selector lever from park "P" to low "L" and back to park "P" again, Figure 6.
4. Let the engine idle.
FIGURE 7:

5. Make sure the transmission fluid level is between the "F" and "L" marks, Figure 7. Add "DEXRON II" fluid as required.

Line Pressure Adjustment
1. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
2. Remove the left front splash shield.
3. Remove the square head plug from the transmission that is labeled "L" and install the pressure gauge, Figure 8.
4. With the transmission in park "P", start the engine. Warm up the engine to operating temperature and adjust the idle speed to 750- 800 RPM for non-turbo units or 725-775 RPM for turbo units.
FIGURE 9:

5. Adjust locknuts on the cable as follows to increase or decrease line pressure:
a. Loosen the cable all the way so the locknuts are as far away from the throttle cam as possible, Figure 9.
b. Turn the locknuts clockwise to increase or counterclockwise to decrease the line pressure to 432-450 kPa (63-66 psi).
6. Turn off engine.
7. Remove the pressure gauge and install the square head plug in the transmission.
8. Install the left front splash shield.
9. Install the wheel and tire assembly.
