Transaxle Inspecton Procedure
TRANSAXLE INSPECTION PROCEDURE
1. Check the transmission fluid for:
^ Correct fluid level
^ General condition
^ Discoloration
^ Burned odor
^ Metal or foreign particles
2. If transmission fluid contamination is found or suspected, proceed to the cleaning and valve body replacement procedure. If the Transmission fluid is OK, proceed to Step 3 to further diagnose the condition.
NOTE:
IF THE TRANSAXLE REQUIRES CLEANING, MAKE SURE TO INSTALL A NEW 2-3 ACCUMULATOR PISTON, (FOJY-7F251-A) AS PART OF THE RE-ASSEMBLY PROCESS.
3. Perform the 4EAT Self Test using one of the following methods.
USING SUPER STAR II TESTER, ROTUNDA 007-0041A
a. Turn the ignition key off.
b. Connect the MECS adapter cable, Rotunda 007-00038, to the Star Tester.
c. Connect the adapter cable leads to the blue 4EAT STO and STI connectors. (Located under the dash on the left side of the steering shaft.)
d. Ground the adapter cable.
e. Slide the Star Tester switch to the MECS position.
f. Latch the center button in the test position.
g. Turn the ignition key on.
h. Turn the Star Tester on. It will sound and display an "888" for two seconds.
i. Unlatch and relatch the center test button.
j. Record codes, then unlatch the center button. See the 1989 Probe Shop Manual, page 17-01-15 for Service Code Chart and Troubleshooting Guide.
k. If the condition is still present when there are no service codes displayed or if after the displayed service codes have been corrected, either install a new valve body or proceed to the valve body modification procedure in this article.
USING AN ANALOG VOLTMETER
a. Connect a jumper wire from the 4EAT STI lead to ground.
b. Connect the VOM positive lead to the 4EAT STO wire.
c. Connect the VOM negative lead to ground.
d. Set the VOM to the 20 volt range.
e. Turn the ignition key on.
f. Disconnect and reconnect the STI jumper to ground.
g. Observe the VOM needle for any code indications. See the 1989 Probe Shop Manual, page 17-01-15 for Service Code Chart and Troubleshooting Guide.
h. If the condition is still present when there are no service codes displayed or if still present after the displayed service codes have been corrected, either install a new valve body or proceed to the valve body modification procedure in this article.
USING "MANUAL SHIFT LIGHT (MSL)"
a. Turn the ignition key on.
b. Jumper the 4EAT STI wire to ground.
c. Observe the MSL light for blinking.
d. Record codes. See the 1989 Probe Shop Manual, page 17-01-15 for Service Code Chart and Troubleshooting Guide.
e. If the condition is still present when there are no service codes displayed or if still present after the displayed service codes have been corrected, either install a new valve body or proceed to the valve body modification procedure in this article.
