Camshaft: Service and Repair

1. Remove engine from vehicle and mount in suitable work stand.
2. Remove timing cover as outlined under TIMING COVER.
3. Remove rocker arm covers and intake manifold as described elsewhere in this section.
4. Using a magnet, remove hydraulic tappets. Keep tappets in order, so they can be installed in their original position. If tappets are stuck in their bores by excessive varnish or gum buildup, use hydraulic tappet puller or equivalent.
5. Check camshaft endplay. If endplay is greater than .005 inch replace thrust plate.
6. Remove timing chain and sprockets.
7. Remove camshaft thrust plate, then carefully pull camshaft from front of engine. Use caution to avoid damaging bearings, journals and lobes.
8. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Prior to installation, lubricate camshaft lobes and journals with SAE 50 weight oil.
b. Tighten camshaft thrust plate to specifications.
c. Lubricate tappets and tappet bores with heavy engine oil.
