Lifter / Lash Adjuster: Service and Repair

Before replacing hydraulic valve tappets for noisy operation, ensure the noise is not caused by improper valve-to-rocker arm clearance, worn rocker arms, pushrods or rocker arm cover baffle clearance.
1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then drain cooling system.
2. Remove air intake throttle body.
3. Remove rocker arm covers and intake manifold assembly.
4. Loosen rocker arm fulcrum attaching bolts enough so rocker arm can be lifted off pushrod and rotated aside.
5. Remove pushrods. Keep pushrods in order, so they can be installed in their original position.
6. Using a magnet, remove tappets. Keep tappets in order, so they can be installed in their original position. If tappets are stuck in their bores by excessive varnish or gum buildup, use hydraulic tappet puller or equivalent.
7. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Lubricate each tappet and bore with suitable lubricant.
b. Torque rocker arm fulcrums bolts in two steps first to 5.1-11 ft. lbs., then 20-28 ft. lbs. Prior to torquing bolts, ensure pushrods and rocker arms are fully seated.
