Audible Warning Device: Description and Operation

The Warning Chime System is contained within the Central Processing Unit (CPU) which controls all alarm functions. The CPU is controlled by a microprocessor and is connected directly to the Joint Box.

The CPU has two main functions, and they are as follows:

SOUND ALARM SYSTEM

- Key Warning:
The warning sounds when the driver's door is open and the key is in the Ignition Switch. It sounds until either the door is closed or the key is removed.

- Lamps On Reminder Alarm:
The Warning Chime sounds when the driver's door is opened and the Headlamp Switch is on. It sounds until either the door is closed or the Headlamp Switch is turned off.

- Seat Belt Alarm:
This alarm will sound (for approximately 6 seconds) simultaneously with the lighting of the Seat Belt Indicator Lamp when the Ignition Switch is placed in the ON position and the driver's seat belt is unbuckled.

- Vehicle Maintenance Monitor (VMM) Alarm:
This alarm will sound once to inform the driver of the status of various systems.

- Turbocharged Overboost Alarm:
This alarm will sound when an overboost condition is detected by the ECA. In conjunction with the alarm, the ECA will execute the fuel cutoff operation until the overboost condition is eliminated.

NOTE: On VMM equipped vehicles only, the door ajar, stoplamp, and coolant level warning signals are processed by the CPU before they are sent to the VMM Assembly.

TIMER SYSTEM

- Seat Belt Timer:
This timer controls the duration of alarm and indicator lamp illumination. The duration for the lamp and alarm is approximately six seconds.

- Key Illumination Lamp Timer:
This timer controls the duration that the lamp is illuminated. When either door is opened, the lamp is activated and will remain on for approximately 30 seconds, or until the Ignition Switch is placed in the RUN position. If the vehicle is equipped with the illuminated entry feature, this timer will also cause the interior lamps to remain on approximately 30 seconds whenever either door handle is pulled up, whether the door is open or not.

- Interior Lamp Timer:
This timer controls the duration the interior lamps remain on after either door has been opened. The duration the lamps remain on after both doors are closed is about five seconds.
