Brake Shoe: Service and Repair

REMOVAL
1. Raise and support vehicle, then remove wheel and tire assembly.
2. Remove grease hub cap.

Rear Drum Brake:





3. Remove brake drum screws, then the drum.
4. Remove wheel hub.

5. Remove brake shoe hold down springs, using screwdriver to push in and twist spring to disengage it from pin.
6. Remove parking brake rear cable and conduit from parking brake cable anchor pate. Remove brake shoe retracting spring.
7. Remove trailing brake shoe and lining from rear brake strut and quadrant, then the leading brake shoe and lining.

INSTALLATION
1. If brake shoes and linings are being reused, inspect shoes and linings and measure thickness.
2. Clean rear brake backing plate with suitable vacuum, then lubricate six brake shoe and lining contact points with high temperature lubricant Also lubricate rear brake backing plate where brake shoes and linings ride.
3. Ensure rear wheel cylinder bolts are tight.
4. If new brake shoes and linings are being installed, brake drums should be resurfaced to remove glazing, ensuring an equal friction surface from side to side and correcting out-of-round and bell conditions.
5. Position trailing brake shoe and lining in rear brake strut and quadrant and install brake shoe hold down spring pin.
6. Position leading brake shoe and lining against rear brake strut and quadrant and install brake shoe hold down spring pin.
7. Install upper and lower brake shoe retracting springs.





8. Measure brake drum with brake adjustment gauge D81L-1103-A or equivalent.
9. Adjust brake shoes and linings to same measurement of brake drum by inserting screwdriver into knurled quadrant of rear brake strut and quadrant
10. Install wheel hub. Tighten a new nut to 130-174 ft lb and stake it.
11. Install brake drum. Tighten the brake drum screws to 89-123 in lb.
12. Install grease cap, then the wheel and tire assembly. Tighten lug nuts to 65-87 ft lb.
