Parking Brake System: Adjustments

1. Start engine and press brake pedal several times while vehicle is moving in reverse.
2. Stop engine, then remove console panel as follows:
a. Disconnect battery ground cable, then remove armrest base to armrest compartment screws.
b. Remove armrest base, then the armrest compartment to ash receptacle bracket screws.
c. Remove armrest compartment then unsnap coin tray from console finish panel.
d. Remove console panel nuts from console panel ash receptacle bracket.
e. On models equipped with manual transaxle, unscrew shift control selector lever knob.
f. On models equipped with automatic transaxle, remove console top panel.
g. Engage parking brake, then gently pull up on console finish panel to separate it from console panel.
h. Remove instrument panel ash receptacle illumination miniature bulb and socket from console finish panel.
i. Disconnect cigar lighter knob and element electrical connectors, then remove console front finish panel screws.
j. Remove console panel screw then the panel from vehicle.
3. Remove three parking brake lever boot screws, then the parking brake lever boot.

Parking Brake Control:





4. Turn parking brake control adjusting nut at front of parking brake control to shorten front parking brake control cable and conduit. Tighten adjusting nut until it takes five to seven notches to fully set parking brake.
5. Turn ignition switch ON, then pull parking brake control one notch to ensure parking brake warning lamp illuminates.
6. Ensure rear brakes do not drag.
7. To install console panel, reverse removal procedure.
