Steering Wheel: Service and Repair

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Center front wheels to straight ahead position.
3. Disconnect speed control electrical connector, if equipped.
4. Make an alignment mark on steering wheel and steering shaft for correct alignment during assembly.
5. Remove steering wheel retaining nut.

CAUTION: Do not attempt to remove steering wheel by hitting steering shaft with a hammer. Steering shaft will collapse, causing steering wheel to bind.

6. Install steering wheel puller T67L-3600-A, or equivalent to steering wheel.
7. Remove steering wheel assembly from column, routing wire harness through steering wheel as steering wheel is lifted off shaft.
8. Apply two strips of tape across clockspring and housing to prevent accidental rotation. If clockspring rotates, adjust as follows:
a. Turn clockspring clockwise until it stops.

CAUTION: Do not apply excessive force to clockspring.

b. Rotate clockspring counterclockwise 2.75 turns.
c. Align marks on clockspring and housing.
9. Reverse procedure to install. Torque steering wheel retaining nut to 29-36 ft lb.
