TRANSAXLE - CD4E - VEHICLES WITH 2.0L ENGINE - DIRECT CLUTCH SEPARATOR PLATES - SERVICE TIP

FORD:
1996 CONTOUR, PROBE

LINCOLN-MERCURY:
1996 MYSTIQUE

ISSUE:
Beginning March 1, 1996, all CD4E transaxles, with 2.0L engines, will be assembled with 2 mm thick direct clutch separator plates. The current 3 mm plates were replaced by 2 mm plates due to the incorporation of the direct clutch high energy friction material. The forward/direct/coast clutch cylinder and hub assembly have also been changed because of relocation of the snap ring groove.

ACTION:
Refer to the following to verify the correct parts are used if service to a CD4E transaxle is required.

If the direct clutch separator plates require replacement without replacing the cylinder and hub assembly, identify the size of the separator plate being used and replace with the same size plate. Refer to Figure 1.

For 1996 models, when replacing the cylinder and hub assembly, use the latest level cylinder and hub assembly and the 2 mm direct clutch plates. Refer to Figures 1 and 2.

For 1995 models, when replacing the cylinder and hub assembly, use the previous level cylinder and hub assembly. The 3 mm direct clutch plates will be included in the service package.
