6. Remove the trailing brake shoe and lining from the rear brake strut and quadrant. Remove the leading brake shoe and lining.
INSTALLATION

1. After cleaning the rear brake backing plate with Rotunda Brake/Clutch/Service Vacuum 164-R3600 or equivalent, lubricate the six brake shoe and lining contact points with Silicone Brake Caliper Grease and Dielectric Compound D7AZ-19A331-A (Motorcraft WA-10) or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESE-M 1C171-A. Also lubricate the rear brake backing plate where the rear brake shoes and linings ride.
NOTE: If the rear brake shoes and linings are to be reused, inspect the rear brake shoes and linings and measure the thickness.
2. Check to be sure that the rear wheel cylinder bolts are tightened to 10-13 Nm (89-115 inch lbs.).
3. If new rear brake shoes and linings are being fitted, the brake drums should always be resurfaced. This removes glazing, ensures an equal friction surface from side to side, and corrects out of round and bell conditions.
4. Position the trailing brake shoe and lining in the rear brake strut and quadrant and install the brake shoe hold-down spring pin.

5. Position the leading brake shoe and lining against the rear brake strut and quadrant and install the brake shoe hold-down spring pin.
6. Install the upper brake shoe retracting spring and lower brake shoe retracting spring.

7. Adjust the rear brake shoes and linings by first measuring the brake drum with Brake Adjustment Gauge D81L-1103-A or equivalent and measure the outside diameter of the rear brake shoe and lining.

8. Insert a screwdriver into the knurled quadrant of the rear brake strut and quadrant and adjust the rear brake shoes and linings to the same measurement of the brake drum.
9. Install the wheel hub.
10. Install the brake drum. The rear brake shoes and linings should just touch the brake drum when properly adjusted.
