Disassembly And Assembly

DISASSEMBLY
1. Remove the dust boots and pistons from the rear wheel cylinder housing.
2. Push out the rear wheel cylinder housing parts with a wood dowel.
3. Inspect the rear wheel cylinder.
4. If the rear wheel cylinder rear bore is worn, rusted or pitted, replace the rear wheel cylinder. The rear wheel cylinder bore should not be honed as it will remove the hard, highly polished surface in the bore, leaving a softer, rougher surface. The rougher surface would cause faster wear of the cup seals and the rear wheel cylinder bore.

ASSEMBLY
1. Always install new cup seals and dust boots when reassembling a rear wheel cylinder. Also lubricate the bore with brake fluid or the special "pink" assembly lubricant that comes with the rear wheel cylinder housing rebuilding kit.

CAUTION: Never allow any petroleum product or mineral oil to contact the inside of a brake hydraulic system. Mineral oil and petroleum products deteriorate the natural rubber seals used in brake hydraulic systems. If a brake system becomes contaminated, it must be flushed with clean brake fluid and all rubber seals and flex hoses replaced.

2. Assemble the rear wheel cylinder using the illustration as shown in the disassembly procedure. Remember that the cup seals always face inward and that the cup expanders always go between the cup seals and the spring.
