Draining and Filling

CAUTION: Less than 35 percent coolant concentrate, approximately 2 liters (2.1 quarts) mixed with water with an outside temperature at -16° C (4° F) or less may cause engine corrosion and overheating.

With the engine off and sufficiently cool, place the climate control selector knob at the maximum heat position, remove the radiator cap, open the radiator draincock and allow the coolant to drain. A 9.5 mm (3/8-inch) inner diameter hose should be attached to the radiator draincock to direct the coolant into a suitable container.

To refill the system with a 50/50 mix of Ford Premium Cooling System Fluid E2FZ-19549-AA or -B or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESE-M97B44-A, and water, use the following steps:

1. Close the radiator draincock and fill the cooling system to the top of the water hose connection.
2. With the radiator filler cap removed, run the engine until the lower radiator hose feels warm, indicating the water thermostat has opened.
3. With the engine idling, add coolant until it reaches the top of the water hose connection.
4. Turn off the engine. Check the coolant level in the filler port at the water hose connection and add coolant mixture if required to restore the level.

5. Fully install the radiator filler cap and fill the radiator coolant recovery reservoir until it reaches the F mark on the coolant level dipstick.
