Passenger Side Air Bag

REMOVAL

NOTE: If the air bag did not deploy in a collision, the air bag may not have been needed. Complete the diagnosis of the air bag system before replacing the air bag. Refer to Testing and Inspection.

1. Disconnect the battery ground cable and wait one minute for the backup power supply energy to be depleted.

WARNING: The backup power supply energy must be depleted before any air bag component service is performed. To deplete the backup power supply energy, disconnect the battery ground cable and wait one minute.

2. Wait one minute while the backup power supply depletes.

3. Disconnect the two air bag diagnostic module connectors (under the LH instrument panel pad.

4. Open the glove compartment door, push in the sides of the glove compartment to release the stoppers and drop down the glove compartment.

5. Remove the glove compartment screws and remove the glove compartment.

6. Remove the screws from the glove compartment upper cover and remove the glove compartment upper cover.

7. Disconnect the passenger side air bag module electrical connectors.

8. Remove the four passenger side air bag module bolts.

9. Remove the passenger side air bag module by pushing on the passenger side air bag module from inside the instrument panel. Do not handle the passenger side air bag module by the edges of the trim cover.

WARNING:

- When carrying a live air bag, make sure the bag and trim cover are pointed away from your body. In the unlikely event of an accidental deployment, the bag will then deploy with minimal chance of injury.

- In addition, when placing a live air bag on a bench or other surface, always face the bag and trim cover up, away from the surface. This will reduce the motion of the module if it is accidentally deployed.

NOTE: Do not pull the wiring when handling the passenger side air bag module.

INSTALLATION
1. Insert the passenger side air bag module into the instrument panel, making certain the guide pins insert into the guide holes. The tab on the passenger side air bag module must insert into the clip in the instrument panel.

2. Secure the passenger side air bag module with the four passenger side air bag module bolts removed during the removal procedure. Tighten the passenger side air bag module bolts to 2.7-3.7 Nm (22-33 lb in).

NOTE: Make certain the wiring harness is not pinched between the passenger side air bag module and the instrument panel pad.

3. Connect the passenger side air bag module electrical connectors.

NOTE: Connect all connectors securely.

4. Insert the pin on the connector into the hole on the back of the passenger side air bag module.

5. Install the glove compartment upper cover and the glove compartment.

6. Connect the two diagnostic module connectors.

7. Connect the battery ground cable.

8. Turn the ignition key to On to verify that the air bag indicator is operative.
