Steering Column: Description and Operation

The steering column connects the steering wheel to the steering gear and houses ignition components, switches and wiring. Two bolts support the upper bracket and two nuts support the lower hinged bracket.

The fixed and tilt steering columns support the driver side air bag module. The driver side air bag module is designed to minimize driver injury in an accident when used in conjunction with a safety belt. An air bag sliding contact at the base of the steering wheel transfers electrical signals to the driver side air bag module mounted in the center of the steering wheel.
