Steering Wheel: Testing and Inspection

1. With the ignition OFF and the wheels in the straight ahead position, gently turn the steering wheel to the left and right to check for free play.
2. Free play should be between 0 mm and 30 mm (0-1.18 inch). If the free play exceeds this limit, check for a worn lower steering column shaft in the steering gear. Free play can be adjusted after removing the steering gear.
3. Move the steering wheel in the direction of the arrows as shown. As these movements are being executed check for steering shaft joint play, steering wheel looseness, or steering column looseness, and repair or replace as necessary.
