Clutch, A/T

COAST CLUTCH
^ The coasting clutch transmits the torque converter drive force to the primary sun gear. The coasting clutch external clutch plate is coupled to the third gear coasting clutch cylinder, which is coupled to the reverse clutch drum. When the turbine shaft rotates, the reverse clutch drum, the third gear coasting clutch cylinder, and the coasting clutch external clutch plate rotate.
^ The coasting clutch internal clutch plate is coupled to the one-way clutch inner race, and the one-way clutch inner race is coupled to the primary sun gear. Rotation of the coasting clutch internal clutch plate causes the one-way clutch inner race and primary sun gear to rotate. When hydraulic pressure is applied to the piston, the coasting clutch external clutch plate and coasting clutch internal are pressed tightly together. The rotation of the turbine shaft is transmitted through the reverse clutch drum, coasting clutch, and one-way clutch inner race to the primary sun gear. Primary Sun Gear and One-Way Clutch
^ The primary sun gear is the center gear in a planetary gear set. A one-way clutch allows rotation in only one direction. The one-way clutch on the primary sun gear is a "sprag" clutch. If the clutch tries to rotate in the wrong direction, the sprag become wedged between the inner and outer races and rotation is stopped.

FORWARD CLUTCH
^ The forward clutch transmits the torque converter drive force to the primary sun gear. The forward clutch operates during forward movement of the vehicle
^ The forward clutch external clutch plate of the forward clutch is coupled to the reverse clutch drum. The reverse clutch drum is in turn coupled to the turbine shaft. When the turbine shaft rotates, the reverse clutch drum and forward clutch external clutch plate rotate together as one unit.
^ The forward clutch internal clutch plate is coupled to the one-way clutch outer race, and the inner race is coupled to the primary sun gear. The one-way clutch engages only when its outer race rotates counterclockwise. Therefore, under engine power the forward clutch internal clutch plate, one-way clutch outer race, one-way clutch inner race, and primary sun gear all rotate together as one unit.
^ When hydraulic pressure acts upon the forward clutch piston, the forward clutch external clutch plate and the forward clutch plate are pressed tightly together, and the rotation of the turbine shaft is transmitted through the reverse clutch drum and one-way clutch to the primary sun gear.

HIGH CLUTCH
^ The 3-4 clutch transmits the torque converter drive force to the front planet. The external clutch plate is coupled to the 3-4 clutch cylinder, which is coupled to the turbine shaft. When the turbine shaft rotates, the 3-4 clutch cylinder and external clutch plate rotate together as one component.
^ Because the internal clutch plate is coupled to the carrier hub, the internal clutch plate and carrier hub rotate together as one component, causing the front planet to rotate.
^ When hydraulic pressure is applied to the clutch piston, the external clutch plate and the internal clutch plate are pressed together tightly and the rotation of the turbine shaft is transmitted through the 3-4 clutch cylinder and carrier hub to the front planet.

LOW/REVERSE CLUTCH
^ The low/reverse clutch locks the rotation of the low/reverse hub. It operates during reverse gear and MANUAL LOW (1) first gear.
^ The low/reverse external clutch plate is coupled to the Transaxle case and does not rotate. The low/reverse internal clutch plate is coupled to the low/reverse clutch hub, and the low/reverse clutch hub is coupled to the front planet. A one-way clutch is adjacent to the low/reverse clutch hub. Because the one-way clutch is coupled to the Transaxle case, the hub and front planet can only rotate counterclockwise when looking at the front planet from the pump side of the Transaxle.
^ When hydraulic pressure is applied to the reverse clutch piston, the low/reverse external clutch plate and low/reverse internal clutch plate are pressed tightly together, and the Transaxle case and low/reverse clutch inner race are connected. The rotation of the front planet stops when the low/reverse clutch is applied.

ONE-WAY CLUTCH
PRIMARY SUN GEAR AND ONE-WAY CLUTCH
The primary sun gear is the center gear in a planetary gear set. A one-way clutch allows rotation in only one direction. The one-way clutch on the primary sun gear is a "sprag" clutch. If the clutch tries to rotate in the wrong direction, the sprag become wedged between the inner and outer races and rotation is stopped.

ONE-WAY CLUTCH AND FRONT PLANET
The one-way clutch on the front planet is a "roller" clutch. The one-way clutch allows rotation in one direction only. If the clutch tries to rotate in the wrong direction, the rollers are forced into their slots and the outer race is secured to the inner race.

REVERSE CLUTCH
^ The reverse clutch transmits torque converter drive force to the rear sun gear and drum. The reverse clutch operates during reverse movement of the vehicle. The reverse clutch external clutch plate is coupled to the reverse clutch drum, which is coupled to the turbine shaft. When the turbine shaft rotates, the reverse clutch drum and reverse clutch external clutch plate rotate together as one unit.
^ Because the reverse clutch internal clutch plate is coupled to the rear sun gear and drum, the reverse clutch internal clutch plate and the rear sun gear and drum also rotate together as one unit.
^ When hydraulic pressure is applied to the clutch piston, the reverse clutch external clutch plate and the external internal clutch plate are pressed tightly together. The rotation of the turbine shaft is transmitted through the reverse clutch drum to the rear sun gear and drum.
