Coast Clutch

^ The coasting clutch transmits the torque converter drive force to the primary sun gear. The coasting clutch external clutch plate is coupled to the third gear coasting clutch cylinder, which is coupled to the reverse clutch drum. When the turbine shaft rotates, the reverse clutch drum, the third gear coasting clutch cylinder, and the coasting clutch external clutch plate rotate.
^ The coasting clutch internal clutch plate is coupled to the one-way clutch inner race, and the one-way clutch inner race is coupled to the primary sun gear. Rotation of the coasting clutch internal clutch plate causes the one-way clutch inner race and primary sun gear to rotate. When hydraulic pressure is applied to the piston, the coasting clutch external clutch plate and coasting clutch internal are pressed tightly together. The rotation of the turbine shaft is transmitted through the reverse clutch drum, coasting clutch, and one-way clutch inner race to the primary sun gear. Primary Sun Gear and One-Way Clutch
^ The primary sun gear is the center gear in a planetary gear set. A one-way clutch allows rotation in only one direction. The one-way clutch on the primary sun gear is a "sprag" clutch. If the clutch tries to rotate in the wrong direction, the sprag become wedged between the inner and outer races and rotation is stopped.
