Fluid - A/T: Service and Repair
NOTE:^ Normal maintenance and lubrication requirements do not require periodic automatic transmission fluid (ATF) changes. If major service, such as a clutch band, bearing, etc. is required, the Transaxle will have to be removed for service. At the same time the torque converter, cooler and fluid cooler tubes must be thoroughly flushed to remove any contamination.
^ When used after 30,000 miles under continuous or severe conditions, the Transaxle and torque converter should be drained and refilled with new ATF.
^ This is a procedure for partial drain, due to an in-vehicle service operation.
DRAIN
1. Raise and support the vehicle.
WARNING: AVOID SPILLING TRANSMISSION FLUID, THE FLUID MAY BE HOT.
2. Position the drain pan(s) under the Transaxle.
NOTE: It may be useful to measure the amount of ATF drained for use in refilling.

3. Remove the case plug. Remove and discard the copper crush washer.
4. Slowly loosen the transmission oil pan bolts, working from the front LH corner to the rear allowing the transmission fluid pan to gradually drop and the ATF to drain slowly.
5. When all the ATF has been drained, remove and thoroughly clean the transmission fluid pan. Discard the oil pan to case gasket.
6. Remove and discard the oil pan screen and oil pan screen ring.
7. Install a new oil pan screen and oil pan screen ring. Tighten the oil pan screen bolts to 8-10 (71-88 inch lbs.).
CAUTION: DO NOT reuse or clean the oil pan screen. The filter element material will contaminate the Transaxle.
8. Place a new oil pan to case gasket on the transmission fluid pan, and install the transmission fluid pan. Tighten the seventeen transmission oil pan bolts to 8-10 (71-88 inch lbs.).
9. Install the case plug with a new copper crush washer. Tighten the case plug to 40-50 (30-36 ft. lbs.).
10. Lower the vehicle.
FILL
1. Remove the fluid level indicator.
2. Insert a funnel in the oil filler tube.
3. If the Transaxle was disassembled and the torque converter drained, add 8.8L (9.3 quarts) of Motorcraft Multi-Purpose ATF XT-2-BOX, -DDX, -QDX or equivalent.
4. If the Transaxle was not disassembled, fill with approximately the same amount of ATF drained.
CAUTION: Do not overfill.
5. Check the transmission fluid level.
