Steps Before Assembly

NOTE: These procedures should be performed after component removal, prior to installation. Review clutch disc and clutch pressure plate removal and installation procedures.

1. Clean the transaxle clutch housing with a suitable solvent.
2. Check the clutch pressure plate for defects or damage and replace if necessary.
3. Clean the input shaft with a wire brush and suitable solvent. Check the condition of the input shaft. Use a stone to dull the sharp edges of the splines. If splines are worn excessively or notched, the clutch disc will not slide on the input shaft. Replace the input shaft as required.
4. Clean the flywheel face with denatured alcohol or a suitable solvent.
5. Clean the clutch release lever with a wire brush. Smooth the clutch release lever fingers locating faces with Carborundum stone and then clean with a suitable solvent. Apply a light coating of Premium Long-Life Grease XG-1-C or XG-1-K or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESA-M1C75-B to the clutch release lever finger ends and locating faces. If the clutch release lever is worn excessively, replace it.
6. Apply Premium Long-Life Grease to the bushings until clean grease appears from the two bushings. Remove the excess grease.
7. If reinstalling the old clutch pressure plate, clean the contact surface with denatured alcohol or a suitable solvent.
